In April, energy bills for a typical household will go up by 54% a year and, at the same time, national insurance payments are set to increase by almost 10%. Meanwhile, inflation is hitting record highs, the weekly shop is more expensive than ever and for over a decade public sector pay increases have lagged behind the cost of living.
UNISON’s charity, There for You, provides vital support for thousands of members every year, but this year’s Winter Fuel grant programme was over-subscribed in days – even after it was increased by 50%.
Now more than ever, with the cost-of-living crisis hitting unprecedented levels, UNISON members – particularly those on lower incomes – need financial support.
That’s why There for You is launching their Energy Support Fund to help members through the cost-of-living crisis. In order to support as many members as possible over this year, they are asking for donations from branches.
In 2021, UNISON branches donated an incredible £284,228 that provided invaluable support to members, and There for You’s COVID-19 response fund provided relief for over 2,400 people.
Read what some members have had to say about our past support:
“Many thanks from the bottom of the heart! I don’t know how to express the feeling, it’s like a breeze in the hot summer.”
“I genuinely cannot express my family’s gratitude. I will sleep better tonight. Thank you so so much.”
“I’ve had a good old cry – of both relief and gratitude. I can only thank you all at UNISON for providing such support after such a tough year. Community and kindness is everything.”
Anything branches donate will be received gratefully and will continue to improve UNISON members’ and their families’ lives through these unprecedented, challenging times.
